Event traffic marshals

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is reviewing traffic management activities associated with small local community, sporting and charity events. In such events, the flow of nearby traffic needs to be managed. These events are usually held in local communities, often include low speed roads, and impact significantly lower numbers of vehicles.

TMR has received feedback that the costs associated with the delivery of traffic management services at these events can outweigh the benefits of, and sometimes the ability to deliver, the event.

We are considering alternative ways to support event organisers whose events require traffic control in certain low risk and low speed environments.

The department is suggesting the introduction of an 'Event Traffic Marshal' role that would allow appropriately trained people, such as event volunteers, to conduct limited traffic control activities at these events.

The discussion paper details the current situation, proposed approach and expected benefits, as well as other changes associated with the proposal.
