Draft Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan

Comments are being sought on the draft Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan 2017–2022.

The plan is an update of the Reef Water Quaity Protection Plan 2013 and supports delivery of the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.

Feedback will be used to inform the finalisation of the plan as well as development of detailed implementation planning.

The plan has an expanded scope and addresses all land-based sources of water pollution including runoff from urban, industrial and public lands; while recognising the majority of pollution comes from agricultural activities. It includes social, cultural and economic values for the first time.

Water quality targets have been set for the catchments adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef, based on modelling and other scientific information. Priorities for water quality improvement have also been identified based on the highest exposure of coastal or marine ecosystems from catchment sourced pollutants.

The draft plan sets the framework for managing the quality of water flowing to the Great Barrier Reef. The Australian, Queensland and local governments are working in partnership with industry and community to identify how the actions will be delivered.
