Middle managers training

Engaging Queenslanders: Managing Community Engagement is a learning program developed in consultation with a range of Queensland Government agencies to provide practical information to middle managers who engage with, or who supervise others who engage with the community in their work.

The Department of Communities and the Open Learning Institute of TAFE, with funding support from the Department of Industrial Relations, have designed this program specifically to meet the needs of middle managers A06 to A08 or equivalent in the Queensland public sector.

The learning program covers areas including: understanding community engagement as a government priority; identifying and managing risks associated with community engagement; choosing the appropriate level of engagement and methodology to achieve agency and project goals; managing expectations; addressing human resource issues when engaging with community; and evaluating, reporting and modifying engagement processes.

The Department of Communities has convened 15 pilot workshops between April and September this year; ten in regional Queensland and five in Brisbane.

Workshops are now available for the delivery cost. A facilitator's resource kit has been developed and is available at cost.

The program is available as an online learning module through the Government Online Learning Delivery Program at http://www.onlinelearning.qld.gov.au/materials/ce/

For those who cannot access the internet, there are copies of the program available on compact disc (CD) at cost.

The pilot workshops are aimed at refining program content and looking at what best suits the needs of communities when working within a community engagement framework. This involves approximately two hours of pre-workshop reading, a full day of face to face workshop and optional follow-up activities online. Alternatively, the online training module takes approximately four to five hours to complete.

If this program appeals to you, please contact Narelle Heckendorf, A/Principal Policy Officer by emailing or by phone on 3224 7487 to discuss how and when this program can be delivered to meet the needs of your Regional Managers Forum, agency or other cross-government group.
