Oct 2004
Welcome to Communities e-Connect (Ce-Connect) is the new monthly online round-up of leading research, resources and events and source of information and knowledge sharing in the areas of policy and practice for community services, development and engagement. The new name reflects the new role of this knowledge sharing initiative within its new home, the Department of Communities, while retaining a link and reflecting the high standards of its predecessor, CE-Connect.
This month we:
- Look at a recent House of Representatives report into capacity building and service delivery in Indigenous communities.
- Continue to highlight key ethical standards and guidelines this time with the Australian Health Ethics Committee.
- See how evolution of the 'incivilities thesis' over two decades appears to parallel much of the debate about the existence, definition, causes and effects of social capital and community capacity building.
- The last national election seemed to concentrate on Australians under 5 and over 50, so we look at how young people are faring in 2004.
- Mencken's metalaw states, "For every human problem, there is a neat, simple solution; and it is always wrong." It is pleasing to see that "Australians' Perceptions of Controversial Scientific Research" are quite sophisticated and largely favourable but that public trust is hard to earn and easy to lose.
Also featured are a large number of conferences and professional development opportunities over the next few months, many of them in Queensland. Please check the list and mark your calendars.
We invite your contributions and comments. Please direct any feedback to: research@communities.qld.gov.au.
