Council or shire leaders are called mayors.

Responsibility
- Make decisions on local, town or city matters and make local laws
- Provide services to local communities
- Responsible for parks, animal control, rubbish collection, libraries, traffic control, water supply and sewerage, community health
- Collect rates, fees and fines to pay for services
- Receive grants from state and federal governments
Voting
Residents living in each city council area or shire have one vote each to vote for Councillors.
