The Australian system of government is based on a liberal democratic tradition. This tradition includes the right to practice your religion, to mix with whoever you like and to speak openly.

Three levels of Government

Federal Government
The Australian Parliament is based in Canberra with two major political decision-making institutions: the House of Representatives and the Senate

State Government
Each State and Territory has its own government and parliament

Local Government
Each State and territory has a number of city councils and shire councils
