There are a number of universities and research institutions working on rural and regional research.

Queensland

Institute for Sustainable Regional Development
Affiliated with Central Queensland University, Rockhampton.

James Cook University
JCU is part of Cooperative Research Centres that investigate questions of regional significance; for example, the CRC for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Australia

Institute for Regional and Rural Research
The Centre for Regional Innovation and Competitiveness (CRIC) is a research centre based within the University of Ballarat.

Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation
Conducts research into innovative and emerging rural industries as well as those industries too small to support their own R&D Corporation.

Cooperative venture
An online resource for information and current research on innovation in rural industries

Land and Water Australia
Focus on land and water management issues. Provides a searchable database ('Streamline') for information published across wide range of land and water issues.

Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics
Provides economic policy analysis and medium and long term commodity price forecasts.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation
Conducts research across agribusiness; energy and transport; environment and natural resources; information, communication and services; manufacturing; mineral resources; and health.
