Information, consultation and active participation can be considered along a community engagement continuum, with increasing levels of engagement and influence towards the 'active participation' end of the spectrum.
Information sharing
- Involves a minimal level of engagement and citizen/community influence
- Advises residents of decisions or services
- Information is received by telephone, postal mail, Internet and through education and awareness raising activities
Consultation
- Involves a shared level of engagement and citizen/community influence
- The Queensland Government asks for your views on concerned issues, and on considering your views, they will provide you with feedback on how your views affected the final decision made on the issue
- Receiving feedback takes some time as decisions and changes take a long time
- Consultation includes face-to-face meetings, online surveys and phone interviews
Active participation
- Involves a substantial level of engagement and citizen/community influence
- Individuals, communities and the Queensland Government work together closely to develop better policy, programs and services
- Active participation includes regular meetings, and participation on committees, reference or advisory groups
