Improving Permanency for Children in Care discussion paper
Closing date for feedback: 16 October 2006
The closing date for feedback on the discussion paper Improving Permanency for Children in Care was 16 October 2006. Improving Permanency for Children in Care gave people the opportunity to identify the relevant issues in relation to a proposed new type of permanent parenting. This order is intended to provide children with the stability of a lifelong relationship with a permanent caregiver and family while allowing them to maintain their original identity and an ongoing meaningful relationship with their birth family.
Under a permanent parenting order, full parental responsibility would be transferred to a caregiver until a child turns 18, enabling children to safely exit the child protection system into a nurturing family environment.
Over recent years, the Queensland Government has significantly reformed the child protection system. Reforms have focused on providing a range of suitable placement options, improving the quality of care, and on prevention, early intervention, family support and reunification services.
The department realises that despite its best care and protection, out-of-home care is always less than ideal. So in addition to other measures, the department is now concentrating on providing stability and a regular family life for children who cannot safely return to their birth families. The department wants to ensure that children and young people have access to a range of long-term care options to provide them with the best possible chance to reach their full potential.
Your feedback will be taken into account in shaping the direction of long-term care options available in Queensland. A summary of the feedback obtained during the consultation period will be made available to the public.
